North Jersey Running Enthusiasts, welcome to the 2017 Fall Spectacular Edition of What’s on track for North Jersey. This issue has your boarding pass to some of this seasons most highflying events. Be sure to take a look-see, register early and secure your place on the race/runway. The best events of the year are just about to take flight!
As stated in the previous issue, come 2018 this newsletter will take on an entirely new look and feel with more of a national focus. What’s on Track! Powered by Run America will make its debut in late January 2018.
The infamous Apple Chase, now a 5K and 12K has been reset in Greenview Park, Pequannock. The 5K will now run the ever popular Run for Marge course while the 12K will extend the 5K course to Rt 23 and back.
The Apple Chase, having been on a two-year hiatus, is being brought back by its original organizers to its original glory. Both the Chilton Medical Center and SPA23 are back where they started and from what has been discussed the Apple Chase is here for good. Be sure to register and come out and support this Northern NJ staple while enjoying the event amenities, starting with an extremely fast (PR Ready) and flat pair of courses. That said, lets take a look at what’s on tap for the remainder of 2017!
An over the top Seeing Eye 5K Run/Walk returns to the Morristown area, Sunday, October, 8th. Come celebrate Blindness Awareness month with this 2nd Annual Doggy Dash Walk & 5K Run. Upgraded with a picturesque USATF Certified course the event is truly something to “see”! Starting with our dog lovers the event will boast a six (6) category Doggy Pageant presented by Nobivac. Owners and attendees won’t need to be jealous of their pooches as there will be a costume contest just for you too! Add in a 50/50, cash and gift basket raffles, a free face and caricature painter/artist, a DJ and there’s something for everyone. The event is pulling out all the stops to ensure a good time for all walks of life!
Those looking to join the event may run or walk as an individual, or invite their friends, family or colleagues to participate in a Doggy Dash team. Turn your participation into a fundraiser and be eligible for some really nice prizes! Can’t run, but want to be involved, volunteering opportunities are available. 9/24 – Bulter Wilson 5K (PrincetonU). A running 5K run/walk trandition and charity fundraiser from which all funds raised are transferred directly to the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen (TASK). Anyone can and is invited to participate! You do not need to be affiliated with Princeton University to participate. Families and children of all ages are welcome.
9/24 – Scott-A-Palooza 5K & 1 Mile Walk to Kick ALS. HARK, Inc. is hosting the Scott-A-Palooza 5K to benefiting Scott Fleming and his family. For more information on Hark please visit www.hark-als.org
Scott Fleming is 48 yrs old and living with ALS. He was a member of the US Marine Corp Reserves and an active runner and triathlete before his diagnosis in June of 2013. Scott needs extensive modifications to his home to continue living there with his wife and 3 children as his ALS progresses. All proceeds from the race will be used to help with these expenses.
10/1 – 10th Annual Skylander 5K & 10K Challenge. Save the Date for the 10th Annual Skylander 5K & 10K Challenge which will be held on Sunday, October 1, 2017 on the Sussex County Community College campus. These two (2) USATF-certified events include a challenging 10-kilometer race and a 5-kilometer event. Walkers are welcome in the 5K event. 10/1 – Wayne Color Run. Please join the Wayne Valley Dance Team as they present their 2nd Annual Wayne Color Run Extravaganza! As those that participated last year know, this is not going to be your “run of the mill” color run! The Dance Team will be taking over Wayne Town Hall (municipal building) AND Wayne Valley High School (black top and fields) to cover you with a host of colors… from head to toe! Local sponsors will be taking over the themed Color stations so you don’t want to miss this one… they will be taking about it til Summer time!
Wanna Sneak Peak?!?! There will be a “Tunnel of Color” to kick things off followed by three (3) additional stations where you’ll be colorized! You also do not want to forget this course makes 2 full loops so there’s twice the color and twice the fun as compared to your tradition color run. The Dance Team will be continuing its efforts to support the St. Jude Children’s Hospital in the process. Please mark your calendar, then make your way to Wayne Town Hall (intersection of Valley Road and Preakness Ave) the 1st of October for one of the best Color Runs around! The event takes place at/on the Blairstown (New Jersey) Airport. Be sure to click the banner about or visit the event website for the absolute details!
10/7 (being rescheduled for late October, stay tuned) Garfield Boilermaker 5K. A community advocate and Garfield preschool teacher, friend, and sister of the YMCA’s CEO, Susan Gallagher Colurciello passed away in May 2015 from a 3 year battle with breast cancer. This year’s event will not only raise money for the Garfield YMCA, Garfield Boilermakers High School Athletics Foundation and Veterans Day Dinner but also donate a large amount to the American Cancer Society this year! We want this year’s event to be as great as she was as a person. Please come out and help us support and honor Susan’s life, her battle, and now her spirit.
10/8 LCPC Run/Walk/Cheer/5K. The event will be held at the Liberty Corner Presbyterian Church. Run/Walk/Cheer is a competitive 5K open to runners and walkers of all ages, with a shorter (1 mile) family course for the youngest participants. Childcare is available (infants through age four). The course begins and ends at Liberty Corner Presbyterian Church. Everyone is invited to a special worship service at 9 am in Center Court. The race will begin at 10:30 am. This year, net proceeds from the event will be donated to Hearts for Honduras, Interfaith Hospitality Network, and local fire/EMS.
10/14 Spectrum Sprint 5K, D’Feet Disabilities 5K, Overpeck Park in Ridgefield Park, NJ (Bergen County) & 10/28 Spooky Sprint 5K, Johnson Park in Piscataway, NJ (Middlesex County) are the fundraising productions of the Spectrum for Living which is a non-profit organization with a mission of helping adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities reach their full potential. Registration for both walks will begin at 8:30 am with the 5K to begin at 10:00 am. Those who partake are encouraged to either walk or run the course. The events will be timed as they are USTAF certified courses, with prizes awarded in various age groups. The registration fee is $25 (advance purchase) and $30 for day of registration. Register by September 28th to be guaranteed an event T-Shirt! Your support and participation at one (or both) of these 5K Runs/Walks will help to raise the funds that will benefit over 1,000 adults living with an intellectual/developmental disability in New Jersey. 10/21 5K Run for Completion. Update! This year’s event has moved to Wanaque and will boast a newly-certified “out and back” USATF Course. The 5k Run for Completion is a partnership between the Passaic County Community College Foundation and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. For the past 40 years, thousands of PCCC students have directly benefited from PCCC Foundation and the generosity of our donors. The PCCC Foundation is teaming up with Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, whose mission is to recognize academic achievement of college students and to provide opportunities for them to grow as scholars and leaders, to continue to support and to make a difference in the lives of PCCC students, helping them to ‘Dream Big. Achieve More. Give Back.” Be sure to make your way to the PCCC Wanaque Campas and kick this 5K with the Passaic County Community College Community!
10/22 Manila Madness 5K Military Run.
10/28 Newton Pride Halloween 5K. Newton Pride Halloween Fun Run 5K is a community-inspired event will be run on a USATF certified course from Newton High School’s Parking Lot through the roads of United Methodist Communities (Bristol Glen) and back to Newton High School. The Newton Pride Foundation is thrilled to welcome Steve Petro Memorial Fund participants to our FUN RUN! Don your favorite costume, bask in your favorite alter – persona – It’s Halloween! Let’s make it a Costume Party as well. Walk or run, have some fun!
10/28 New Milford Ed Foundation 10k & 5k Grand Prix and Kids Run. Join the New Milford Education Foundation for their premier fundraising event. Both the 10k Race (Main Event) and 5K Run/Walk are USA Track & Field Sanctioned & Certified in addition to participating in the New Balance Grand Prix of New Jersey. Both courses are flat & fast course and traverse through New Milford, a scenic and picturesque Bergen County suburban community. All proceeds collected by the NMEF Road Runners Club will go towards funding grants that will enhance the education of New Milford school age children.
11/23 Krogh’s Annual Turkey Trot. Come Thanksgiving morning our North Jersey Spartans will engage and run their 10th Annual Krogh’s Turkey Trot. It’s the Tradition before the Tradition! It’s also the 5th largest turkey trot in NJ so if you are thinking bigger is better you just might be right. Garden State Runs has voted the Krogh’s Turkey Trot the #1 Thanksgiving Day Run in NJ! Registration is open so get your morning run in before the feast ensues!
11/23 The Glen Rock Thanksgiving Day Run. Bergen County-based Racefaster has a Thanksgiving Day Runs to satisfy any appetite. The The Glen Rock Thanksgiving Day Run is in its second year and is a feast and a half. Need a local place to celebrate Thanksgiving Morning while enjoying a little of exercise! This event has you covered! If, by chance, you wont be around Thanksgiving Day and want some of that North Jersey Thanksgiving Spirit be sure to checkout the Smiles for Margaret Huff Puff after you Stuff the Saturday following Thanksgiving.
11/23 D&I Fitness Turkey Trot. Burn off that pumpkin pie before you even get to the table! Join D&I Fitness for the 3rd Annual Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning at 8am. Run the 5k or walk the 2 mile loop, either way, you will have a great time at this family friendly event. Visit the link above for more information or to register! A portion of the proceeds from the race will be donated to the Isaiah House. On the day of the race, we will be collecting non perishable food to help stock their shelves. For those that have not heard the news the 2nd Generation of the Run America mobile app is now available in the iTunes Appstore and Google Play. The Run America app is your one stop for everything “running”. Here you can refine, register and record (coming late 2017) your events. Any event that requires you to “move your feet” will be in Run America at some point soon (that is unless the event chooses not to???). Every walk, run, across all known terrains, from sea to shining sea, is destined for Run America. Run America is presently working to integrate all multisport and variety runs too! The idea behind RunAmerica is simple. Provide an app that can filter through all known events, provided a strong profile of preferences, to find the event that you want when and how you want it. The current version of Run America brings together all the events from RunSignUp, Active and Race Entry into a single interface. Runners be sure to check out the app now so you know when its time to run. Race Directors be sure to look into the Run America FREE BIB program now that Road ID has started to charge for their bibs!!!
